And, sure, if you have a political point of view, you have every right to share it. But you have to be careful not to get too self-important. You have to find the balance between being entertaining and being preachy.

People ask me if I ever thought of writing a children’s book. I say, ‘If I had a serious brain injury I might well write a children’s book’, but otherwise the idea of being conscious of who you’re directing the story to is anathema to me, because, in my view, fiction is freedom and any restraints on that are intolerable.
I am tolerant. I want to understand other points of view.
My upbringing is so fundamentally different to my parents‘. It must be strange to look at your child who not only speaks with a different accent but has a totally different view of the world.
But the fact is we did have colonies in the east of Poland, we did have a slave economy there. But this is not common knowledge – or part of our national myth. Think of the long view of life, not just what’s going to happen today or tomorrow. Don’t give up what you most want in life for something you think you want now.
I have this idea of a Taiwan Consensus, which means people in Taiwan have to get together and form a consensus of their own and that they turn around to talk to the Chinese to form a cross-strait consensus so we can build a relationship on that consensus. And in my view, that is the right order to do things.
We have closely monitored the ups and downs of recruiting and retention trends for many years and have been quick to sound the alarm when challenges came into view.

My view is my view. Your view is your view.
I would have been completely brainwashed by this lopsided and racist view of the world if it weren’t for my father. He was a deep thinker and an irrepressible problem solver. He was a Black Socrates, asking why and then spoiling ready-made replies.

Certainly, I am writing as a 21st-century woman, so I am much more inclined to view her as a three-dimensional woman. I think we keep coming up with this stubborn problem of a woman being judged by her appearance rather than her accomplishments. We are much more inclined to ask: was Cleopatra beautiful?
Well, I think he’s right to notice that there is a difference in attitudes and even in the broadest sense of world view between Eastern Europe and Western Europe. Which is old and which is new is an interesting question, and I almost think that maybe he’s got it backwards.

The only thing that I know how to do as an actor, as a trained actor, is you can’t villainize the character you’re playing. Whether it’s a fictional character or a real character. Because then you operate from that sort of negative point of view, and you can’t humanize him.

In the early days I had a very black-and-white view of everything. I think that’s kind of natural for anyone who’s just embraced Islam – or any religion – as a convert. It was important for me to duck out of the fast and furious life I’d been living as a pop star. I was in a different mood.
My view is that at a younger age your optimism is more and you have more imagination etc. You have less bias.

Something that I’ve always been really keen on representing is some honesty with the way that we view ourselves. That’s something I’ve always appreciated watching actors that I’ve looked up to, is when they look like you and me, or they have a funny elbow, or they have, you know, a hairy face.
Essentially, all expressions of human nature ever produced, from a caveman’s paintings to Mozart‘s symphonies and Einstein‘s view of the universe, emerge from the same source: the relentless dynamic toil of large populations of interconnected neurons.

If you’re writing a book that takes place in New York in the moment, you can’t not write about 9-11; you can’t not integrate it. My main character‘s view is the Statue of Liberty and the Trade Center. It doesn’t have to take over, but it has to be acknowledged.
