Winning is great, sure, but if you are really going to do something in life, the secret is learning how to lose. Nobody goes undefeated all the time. If you can pick up after a crushing defeat, and go on to win again, you are going to be a champion someday.
It is really rare to find someone you really, really love and that you want to spend your life with and all that stuff that goes along with being married. I am one of those lucky people. And I think she feels that way too. So the romantic stuff is easy because you want them to be happy.
No matter how fast or how slow you get to the quarterback, it all goes to slow motion when you get there. Everything just stops. You don’t see anything but the quarterback. You don’t hear anything but the quarterback’s breath. It’s almost like you’re a shark. Your eyes get real big and everything’s just quiet.
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at and repair.
My daughter is a real migraine sufferer; the minute she has a handful of Haribo sweets, she gets a headache. There’s a connection between what the liver can’t break down with what goes on to trigger a headache. You just have to be aware.
We owe our success to them, and also to the fact that, as the saying goes, two ‘Eds’ are better than one.
Edmond H. Fischer
The moment the alarm goes off is the first test; it sets the tone for the rest of the day. The test is not a complex one: when the alarm goes off, do you get up out of bed, or do you lie there in comfort and fall back to sleep? If you have the discipline to get out of bed, you win – you pass the test.
Remember, those that wait upon the Lord will rise up with wings like eagles, and they will run and not be weary. And don’t you ever be weary, because the battle goes on, year after year, and we need all of you young people to join us in the battle.
Every shot feels like the first shot of the day. If I’m on the range hitting shot after shot, I can hit them just as good as I did when I was 30. But out on the course, your bodychanges between shots. You get out of the cart, and you’ve got this 170-yard 5-iron over a bunker, and it goes about 138.
I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live by the light that I have. I must stand with anybody that stands right, and stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong.
There is not a week that goes by that I don’t have a dream that I am back in the business.
When you’re making music, it’s meant to beshared with people. Sometimes, even if I’m writing a song, someone else brings a vibe. There’s something different about it. If someone can play a better bassline than me, I’ll let them do it. I’m just here to fit in and see where it goes.
Looking back, I’m really happy with the choices I’ve made in my career. I know for a fact I could be wealthier. Who knows, maybe I could be more successful, maybe not. I don’t know. But just about every single thing I’ve ever done I’ve gone into with the right intentions, and that goes a long way.
What I really like about ‘Grit‘ – especially being the guy who goes on TV every week and says ‘Never Give Up’ and who truly tries to live his life to that credo – we recruited 16 people who said, ‘I will never give up.’ And the only way they can leave the contest is by doing the one thing they said they never would.
In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.
Anyone who wants to look at sunlightnaturally wipes his eye clear first, in order to make, at any rate, some approximation to the purity of that on which he looks; and a person wishing to see a city or country goes to the place in order to do so.
A woman has many faces as she goes through her life. It’s like we need more than one hair-do. We have many, many changes in the evolution of our lives. We have, we learn, and we grow; we view life differently, and life views us differently.
I think music is something that can, and should, be used to get you into different things because eventually what goes up must come down – we’re not going to be the number one group in the world forever – so you have to have something else to fall back on.
A film is sort of binary – it either works or it doesn’t work. It has nothing to do with how good a job you do. If you bring it up to an adequate level where the audience goes with the movie, then it works, that is all.
My father was Abe Burrows, who was a Broadwaylegend. ‘Guys and Dolls,’ ‘How to Succeed,’ ‘Cactus Flower,’ ’40 Karats,’ ‘Can-Can,’ ‘Happy Hunting,’ ‘Reclining Figure,’ it goes on. He was a legend, and when I was growing up, I was Abe Burrows’ kid. That was my self-esteem.
Nobody in this country goes around saying: ‘I’m feeling very oppressed by the E.U.’ Well, one or two people do, but they’re a bit odd. Ultimately, if they’re getting oppressed by the E.U., they’re going to start to feel oppressed by something else and just switch to a new subject of oppression.
Middle English is an exciting field – almost uncharted, I begin to think, because as soon as one turns detailed personal attention on to any little corner of it, the receivednotions and ideas seem to crumple up and fall to pieces – as far as language goes, at any rate.
The man who practises unselfishness, who is genuinely interested in the welfare of others, who feels it a privilege to have the power to do a fellow-creature a kindness – even though polished manners and a gracious presence may be absent – will be an elevating influence wherever he goes.
Mental toughness is a lifestyle. It’s something that you live every single day of your life. When I was growing up, I was a lazy kid. I was a lazy kid, and everybody goes, ‘How did you get to where you’re at today? How did you get to where you’re running 200 miles at one time in 39 hours? Being so disciplined?’
I am the reassurance that they have not changed. In an upside down world, with all the rules being rewritten as the game goes on and spectators invading the pitch, it is good to feel that some things and some people seem to stay just as they were.
My view is that you show Messi one side or the other, and if he goes past you, he goes past you. But if he slips it through your legs, then you have to obstruct him and take the foul. Just don’t ever let yourself be nutmegged.
Am I happiest on the farm or out in the middle? I am a cricketer, but the farm is a very special place and I absolutely love being in the countryside and getting away from the bubble. I like to think I’m a farmer, but there’s so much experience that goes into that.
Sometimes they keep us in the dark, but it’s TV, so sometimes they keep us in the dark because even they don’t know yet. You know what I mean? So, it sort of develops as it goes along and according to various needs that arise.
The biggest organ in your body is your skin, and it’s a permeable membrane. Anything you put on it goes into you. If you can’t pronounce most of the words on the back of the bottle, it’s probably not good for you.
As much as I would love to be a person that goes to parties and has a couple of drinks and has a nice time, that doesn’t work for me. I’d just rather sit at home and read, or go out to dinner with someone, or talk to someone I love, or talk to somebody that makes me laugh.
To me, it’s not the end of the world if I end up not being with someone. I love romance. I love sex. I love men’s company, but I don’t feel I have to be married. Men are a wonderful part of life, like chocolate. But my life goes on whether they’re there or not.
Money can come and go, and fame comes and goes. Peace of mind and a relationship with God is far more important, so this is the precedent that we’ve set in our lives. The bottom line is, we all die, so Jesus is the answer.
I always feel like it’s two key ingredients when it comes to following your dreams, making something happen that the average person deems difficult. If you truly believe it, that’s step one. Step two, is, you know, the hard work that goes along with it.
As the time goes by, you change, your learn new things, your attitude is different. For the moment, I’m still enjoyingski racing so much that it would be difficult for me to think about ending my career.
Music is an art that goes well beyond science. Proof can be found in the huge amount of studies that have been carried out throughout the world based on music-therapy and the important resultsachieved.
A professional player is smarter than a college man. He uses his noodle. He knows what to do and when to do it. He rarely goes up in the air as is the case with most of our college players when they get in a tight place.
Every time a bit of information is erased, we know it doesn’t disappear. It goes out into the environment. It may be horribly scrambled and confused, but it never really gets lost. It’s just converted into a different form.
I’ve always felt that it didn’t feel right for me when a protagonist goes through a storyline where they’re killing a lot of enemies, and at the very end of the story he ends up kissing the heroine and that’s where you end the game.
As far as service goes, it can take the form of a million things. To do service, you don’t have to be a doctor working in the slums for free, or become a social worker. Your position in life and what you do doesn’t matter as much as how you do what you do.
When one makes a Revolution, one cannot mark time; one must always go forward – or go back. He who now talks about the ‘freedom of the press‘ goes backward, and halts our headlong course towardsSocialism.
I think we live in a world where the most important thing is daily life: sharing a space with your family, making meals, being with your people. It’s not only the idea of privacy, it’s the beauty of the moment, at a time in the world when everything goes really fast – too fast.
I heard what was said of the universe, heard it and heard it of severalthousand years; it is middling well as far as it goes – but is that all?
It took me a long time to know enough about writing to really write short stories. You can’t just immerse yourself, as you do in a novel, and see where everything goes. Novels are a very flexible, accommodating form. Short stories aren’t.
I don’t think France is a racist country, I really don’t, but we do still have many problems with our immigrant past, and there’s a shame that goes with that, that works both ways, in the host and in the post-immigrant generation.
The biggest and most interesting crisis in the world is the human crisis, and it never gets boring. It goes back to Shakespeare. You don’t need a gimmick; it’s just man against man and their intolerance of each other.
At college – I went to Yale, and everybody’s very smart, and everybody has their thing that makes them special, and people at Yale would pretend they didn’t recognize me. Only after they’d had a couple of drinks would they start singing the ‘Life Goes On’ theme song.
He was a degenerategambler. That is, a man who gambled simply to gamble and must lose. As a hero who goes to war must die. Show me a gambler and I’ll show you a loser, show me a hero and I’ll show you a corpse.
It’s a funny thing that when a man hasn’t anything on earth to worry about, he goes off and gets married.
Most bayonets throughout history have probably not been used because soldiers just can’t do it, something holds them back… the same goes for shooting the enemy. We’ve got this fascinatingevidence from the Second World War, and also from other wars, that most soldiers couldn’t do it.
To me a real patriot is like a real friend. Who’s your real friend? It’s the person who tells you the truth. That’s who my real friends are. So, you know, I think as far as our country goes, we need more people who will do that.
We are demonstrating for services for all the people and not just services for money. It’s very important that this message goes to the European Parliament today.
In life, you have to take the pace that love goes. You don’t force it. You just don’t force love, you don’t force falling in love, you don’t force being in love – you just become. I don’t know how to say that in English, but you just feel it.
Children are extremely perceptive and absorb what goes on around them long before they can talk or even comprehend language. They are like finely tuned receivers that pick up much more than is merely said. They are receptive and attuned to every mood, feeling, and change that goes on in people around them.
Beto’s copy of the Bill of Rights goes from one to three. Mine includes the Second Amendment. But there are a whole host of people here in Washington… they would be happy to confiscate America’s guns. And if you don’t believe that, then you probably also still believe in Bigfoot.
I tend to have a lot of jokes about ex-girlfriends. They always ask me if they will be the subject of a joke, and I always tell them they won’t. Unless they do something crazy. They all tend to, so you know where that goes. There are no closed doors. The ‘art’ will suffer.
He who gives while he lives, get to know where it goes.
We begin to see, therefore, the importance of selecting our environment with the greatest of care, because environment is the mental feeding ground out of which the food that goes into our minds is extracted.
‘She’s a Mystery to Me’ was released in 1987, when I was 11 or something, and I absolutely adored the song. This song was written by Bono and The Edge, and the story goes that Bono woke up with the tune in his head, then thought that the only voice who could sing this song is Roy Orbison.
I respect everybody who goes to Kentucky. You know that once you sign with Kentucky, the same thing with Duke. You know each and every night it’s going to be a team’s Super Bowl. You’re going to get their best.
Not a day goes by that I don’t look at myself in the mirror and ask God, ‘Why me? Why did you choose me, Ainsley Earhardt from Columbia, South Carolina, to be one of a handful of female national news anchors?’
In a perfect world, I would be a painter. I love working with my hands. I don’t get to do it as much as I like, but I am finding a way to make more time as life goes on because it’s a really great outlet for me to express myself.
Stateless people are hidden. During the 2011 refugeecrises, it was obvious that people were fleeingSomalia and Libya – there was a lot of international attention. Statelessness goes undetected because stateless people are in legal limbo and are afraid to show up.
Over the years, I’ve learnt how to strike a balance between both my lives and give quality time to my passion as well as to my family. Yes, it is tiring at times, and every working woman goes through the phase.
The UFC makes about 99 percent of the money, and the rest goes to the fighters. That one percent ain’t nothing compared to what they make on merchandising, on pay-per-view, and everything else they make around the world.
Strengths are not activities you’re good at, they’re activities that strengthen you. A strength is an activity that before you’re doing it you look forward to doing it; while you’re doing it, time goes by quickly and you can concentrate; after you’ve done it, it seems to fulfill a need of yours.
It goes without saying that the Jewish people can have no other goal than Palestine and that, whatever the fate of the proposition may be, our attitude toward the land of our fathers is and shall remain unchangeable.
It’s not fun to get out of bed early in the morning. When the alarm goes off, it doesn’t sing you a song: it hits you in the head with a baseballbat. So how do you respond to that? Do you crawlunderneath your covers and hide? Or do you get up, get aggressive, and attack the day?
Music is not a very stable business. It comes and it goes, and so does money, but your education stays with you for the rest of your life. When you have that education, and you have nothing to fall back on, you can get a get a job anywhere.
Practically the whole world depends on coral reefs, so if the coral reefs get all killed, then the ocean will start going out of whack, and if the ocean goes out of whack, something might happen on land.
While I appreciate what goes into making high-end Indian dishes, street food has a special place in my heart. Being raised in India, street food played an integral part in my life while growing up.
I was at a restaurant in Glasgow, and I was walking down the stairs. A woman passed me and said, ‘Oh my God, what are you doing here?’ I didn’t know who she was, and I was like, ‘Sorry?’ She goes, ‘Oh no, sorry, I follow you on Twitter. I just didn’t expect to see you here.’
Prayer is more than meditation. In meditation, the source of strength is one’s self. When one prays, he goes to a source of strength greater than his own.
Madame de Stael
Life has got a habit of not standing hitched. You got to ride it like you find it. You got to change with it. If a day goes by that don’t change some of your old notions for new ones, that is just about like trying to milk a dead cow.
I always try to see the good in everything, and that gives me strength. Even when I lost in the London Olympics quarterfinals, I said to myself, ‘Don’t lose heart, God has his own plans.’ Actually, life just goes on; you have to accept whatever challenge you face and become stronger.
Japanese chefs believe our soul goes into our knives once we start using them. You wouldn’t put your soul in a dishwasher!
An opera begins long before the curtain goes up and ends long after it has come down. It starts in my imagination, it becomes my life, and it stays part of my life long after I’ve left the opera house.
Life goes by really fast, and it seems that there are times when you’re burying a lot of friends and family. And then there are times that feel really precious and everybody is doing okay. This is one of those times.
Well, I think they’re all basically the same story. Every culture in the world has them. When you strip it down and analyze it, it’s the young man or girl who goes through a trial or ordeal and hits a very low ebb but manages to get guidance from a Merlin type figure.
Soul music is true to its name. It’s music that connects to your soul, your spirit. When music resonates with people’s spirit like that, when people can emotionally connect with something or it helps to heal them, transform them, that never goes out of style. People will always need something to relate to.
The physical toughness is the obvious – the ability to push through things no matter what’s coming at you, to keep going, to not give in. Never surrender. Usually the victory goes to the guy who can play through it the longest. Of course, the mental part is equally important.
So long as the system of competition in the production and exchange of the means of life goes on, the degradation of the arts will go on; and if that system is to last for ever, then art is doomed, and will surely die; that is to say, civilization will die.
Those who have the strength and the love to sit with a dyingpatient in the silence that goes beyond words will know that this moment is neither frightening nor painful, but a peaceful cessation of the functioning of the body.
Stock market goes up or down, and you can’t adjust your portfolio based on the whims of the market, so you have to have a strategy in a position and stay true to that strategy and not pay attention to noise that could surround any particular investment.
Knowledge goes hand-in-hand with truth – something I learned with a bit of tough love from my Jesuit education first at Regis High School in New York City and then at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass.
There are two golden rules for an orchestra: start together and finish together. The public doesn’t give a damn what goes on in between.
Capitalism doesn’t function when it starts to contract, and we can see that quite clearly right here in the eurozone. It’s like pushing a giant monster under water that’s gasping for air. It goes nuts.
Asianparents, or a lot of parents in general, they have no idea what goes on in this industry. Mine were born in the Philippines, where it’s different, because it is about who you know, and who knows what you have to do to get to the top? So they had a lot of that skepticism.
I love getting anything homemade – anything that’s from the heart. If you can make or craft your own something, that always goes above and beyond, like, a candle – which is great, but if it’s homemade, that’s so much better for me.
At first, when you go to premieres and award shows, you’re thinking, ‘How the hell am I here? All these people I’ve never met are here, and it’s so cool!’ And then, as time goes on, it’s a little bit like, ‘Ah… it’s more like work.’
My heart bleeds, goes out for families with kids with autism.
America is the student who defies the odds to become the first in a family to go to college – the citizen who defies the cynics and goes out there and votes – the young person who comes out of the shadows to demand the right to dream. That’s what America is about.
When people show loyalty to you, you take care of those who are with you. It’s how it goes with everything. If you have a small circle of friends, and one of those friends doesn’t stay loyal to you, they don’t stay your friend for very long.
Not a day goes by where I’m not reminded of Gollum by some person in the street who asks me to do his voice or wants to talk to me about him. But because ‘The Hobbit‘ has been talked about as a project for many years, I knew that at some point I’d have to reengage with him.
Beauty may be skin deep, but ugly goes clear to the bone.
I honestly can’t describe what goes on in my head when I’m out there. People who don’t wrestle can’t possibly understand it. When I’m in the ring, I don’t feel any pain. I’m in another world out there.
God doesn’t do things halfway. He goes all out! When God does something, it’s not just barely enough, mediocre or lukewarm.
The simpler the food, the harder it is to prepare it well. You want to truly taste what it is you’re eating. So that goes back to the trend of fine ingredients. It’s very Japanese: Preparing good ingredients very simply, without distractions from the flavor of the ingredient itself.
I never have really become accustomed to the ‘John.’ Nobody ever really calls me John… I’ve always been Duke or Marion or John Wayne. It’s a name that goes well together, and it’s like one word – John Wayne.
Jon Stewart is exactly the same guy he’s always been, only with money. He knows that the moment he really believes he’s important, the funny goes away and he becomes Bill O’Reilly, except shorter and Jewish.
Faith goes out through the window when beauty comes in at the door.
George Edward Moore
As a kid, you’re like, ‘Do they have Preakness everywhere or just in Maryland?’ You hear people talking about it, and it was like, ‘Oh, everyone goes there to hang out and party.’ I didn’t even know it was a race until I got older.
I didn’t understand at first why I couldn’t meet a guy for so long. But as time goes by, I understood why actresses usually get married late. I think their hearts for work become bigger and happiness from the work takes the most space in their hearts.
Everything I’ve set out to do, I’ve achieved, and all the praise goes to God.
Every day without fail one should consider himself as dead. There is a saying of the elders that goes, ‘Step from under the eaves and you’re a dead man. Leave the gate and the enemy is waiting.’ This is not a matter of being careful. It is to consider oneself as dead beforehand.
If the owner goes inside a team and picks one player to play, I can no longer be the manager. Decisions must be made by the manager.
Having a child makes you realize the importance of life – narcissism goes out the window. Heaven on earth is looking at my little boy. The minute he was born, I knew if I never did anything other than being a mom, I’d be fine.
It takes a lot of time to write and put up a sketch show, but that’s part of who I am. I don’t think that ever goes away, that sensibility – especially coming from the UprightCitizensBrigade. That’s just who I am.
Eradications are special. Zero is a magic number. You either do what it takes to get to zero and you’re glad you did it; or you get close, give up and it goes back to where it was before, in which case you wasted all that credibility, activity, money that could have been applied to other things.
There are angels that receive more interiorly the Divine that goes forth from the Lord, and others that receive it less interiorly; the former are called celestial angels, and the latterspiritual angels.
The trouble with America is that when the dollar only earns 6 percent over here, then it gets restless and goes overseas to get 100 percent. Then the flag follows the dollar and the soldiers follow the flag.
I try to deal with the complexities of power and social life, but as far as the visual presentation goes I purposely avoid a high degree of difficulty.
Show me one guy or woman as funny as Rodney Dangerfield or as good as GeorgeCarlin, Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby, or JoanRivers. There are a lot of good comics out there, no doubt, but as far as the quality of the comics goes, I think what you have is a bunch of situational comics.
People across metroDetroit face discrimination every day in housing, employment, insurance – the list goes on. It might not always be explicit and in your face, but my residents know when they’re being mistreated.
This mum comes up, she’s got a five-year-old kid and she says, ‘Can he have your autograph, you are his favourite person in the whole world.’ I thought, ‘How cool is that? I’ve got five-year-old fans,’ and as I’m signing this autograph, the mum goes, ‘Yeah, yeah, you’re by far the best Wiggle.’
The reality is that diversity as an overall subject has to continue to be addressed onscreen. That goes beyond having a gay superhero. There should be a black superhero, a Latino superhero and, while we’re at it, we still aren’t seeing nearly enough women behind the scenes and as the anchors of movies.
Coach Blatt is very, very knowledgeable about the game. And it just goes to show you that no matter where you’re at, he knows as much about basketball as anyone. You learn a lot from him. And he’s a very charming guy, very personable. He’s pretty funny, too.
I’m realizing for the first time, your life goes on while you’re trying to pursue this career. I saw my career as everything. But you have this life, too. Living your life fully, you come to know yourself better. You’ll find the place for it.
My father always told me I like the ball more than I like playing soccer: since I was a young kid, I was always skilled with it, dribbling furniture around the house. That’s how I see football – fun and dynamic – and this goes beyond me; it’s a characteristic of Brazilian football.
If you’re at a restaurant and someone asks, ‘Fresh pepper?,’ the answer is yes. When people shake off the fresh pepper, they clearly have no interest in living a full life. Same thing goes for grated Parmesan. Why would you turn that down?
The abduction of a child is a tragedy. No one can fully understand or appreciate what a parent goes through at such a time, unless they have faced a similar tragedy. Every parent responds differently. Each parent copes with this nightmare in the best wayhe or she knows how.
People in the street will either call me ‘Prime Minister‘ or ‘Justin.’ We’ll see how that goes. But when I’m working, when I’m with my staff in public, I’m ‘Prime Minister.’ I say that if we’re drinkingbeer out of a bottle, and you can see my tattoos, you should be comfortable calling me ‘Justin.’
Don’t think in the morning. That’s a big mistake that people make. They wake up in the morning and they start thinking. Don’t think. Just execute the plan. The plan is the alarm clock goes off, you get up, you go work out. Get some.
I think that for the actors, the last thing that they want is a director that’s not watching, a director that goes ‘Okay, it sounded good to me,’ and they were doing something else or preoccupied with something else because they were worried about the light changing.
Going to a concert can sometimes be very difficult. It can be a long journey. There’s the ticket prices. But when the music goes to the community – not the community coming to the concert – they say, ‘Wow! I didn’t know that this music was so amazing!’
Remember, you must not sleep at the Seder. If you do, Elijah the Prophet will come with a bag on his shoulders. On the two first nights of Passover, Elijah the Prophet goes about looking for those who have fallenasleep at the Seder, and takes them away in his bag.
I have been told that… time doesn’t flow in a straight line in my films. It goes round in a circle. Sometimes people comment that the films remind them of Ozu. Maybe that’s right. But in Japan, nobody comments on how time passes in my films. So perhaps that is a different way of thinking.
What they’re not ready for is guys like you and I and Nails and all the other gnarly gnarlingtons in my life, that we are high priests, Vaticanassassin warlocks. Boom. Print that, people. See where that goes.
Good authors, too, who once knew better words now only use four-letter words writing prose… anything goes.
I love the physical thing of being on the earth that bore you. I have the same feeling when I walk in a very beautiful place that I have when I play and it goes right.
Jacqueline du Pre
Rihanna takes risks, and I love a woman who takes risks. It just goes to show you have your own mind and your own way of thinking.
When you assume negative intent, you’re angry. If you take away that anger and assume positive intent, you will be amazed. Your emotional quotient goes up because you are no longer almost random in your response.
I try to stay focused on the work and recognize that I’ve been very lucky. Maybe it’s ’cause I grew up with actors, but I’ve seen that recognition comes and goes, so all there really is is your family and friends. You have to maintain those constants in your life. Maintain what’s beyond your work.
Economists typically think that your happiness goes up as you get more money, but the more you have, the less each additional dollar matters. This means that you value money most in times when you have less income and more expenses.
The first thing I do on a Sunday is five hours in front of the TV watching football, football, football. I watch my games back and pick out what didn’t go right and try to make sure it goes well next time.
‘The Dance Scene’ is just a real look at what it takes. You see the award shows. You see the videos and you never realize what goes on behind the scenes. The reality and the preparation. The motivation I have to give each dancer on that set.
At the beginning of writing fiction, too much of the newspaper style was getting into the prose, so I thought, ‘Gee, I should try writing longhand. Maybe I can tap something that goes back to the point before I could type.’
