We do not know what the rules of the game are; all we are allowed to do is to watch the playing. Of course, if we watch long enough, we may eventuallycatch on to a few of the rules. The rules of the game are what we mean by fundamental physics.
‘State’ can be a word that is a noun or a verb or an adverb – it’s kind of why I chose that title. It’s not to confound the audience but to keep me from painting myself into a cul-de-sac in the early stages of making a record by having too high concept or having some really strict set of rules I have to adhere to.
We grew up Amish, but my parentsleft the religion when I was a child. The Amish have lots of rules, and my dadthought many people in the faith were hypocritical because they’d tell others not to do something and then do it themselves.

Don’t talk to me about rules, dear. Wherever I stay I make the goddam rules.

Our participation in the single market, and our ability to help set its rules is the principal reason for our membership of the EU. So it is a vital interest for us to protect the integrity and fairness of the single market for all its members.
People who cling rigidly to gender binaries are more than welcome to. But for a lot of young people, we’re seeing that our gender roles don’t have to be dictated by a set of rules made by society. We can do whatever feels natural to us.
I don’t want to impose rules on people, but you have only a short window, and you’re sorely mistaken if you think you can put off having a family. It’s very hard to find a good man, and it’s never a ‘good time‘ to have a baby if you have a career.
France is the bridge between northern Europe and southern Europe. I refuse any division. If Europe has been reunified, it’s not for it to then fall into egotism or ‘each for one’s own’. Our duty is to set common rules around the principles of responsibility and solidarity.
The big producer is going to figure out how to deal with whatever the rules are, but the little guy who is running a few hundredunits or maybefeeding 1,500 cattle a year, how will they ever comply with these requirements?
The frustration of being ordered around by somebody to do something – everyone can relate to that. I think Beetle represents that – the common man caught in that morass of rules and regulations. I don’t even think of it as an armystrip… it’s a world anyone can understand.
I don’t like vampire movies or zombie movies. I went to see ‘I Am Legend’ with an ex-girlfriend the other day, and I immediatelyrealised it was a zombie movie! You know what I mean? There are certain rules, and those rules are things that you’ve seen many times.
Our school education ignores, in a thousand ways, the rules of healthy development.

I had my hair down for a long time. I shaved my head, you know, a couple of years ago. And, then, I started to wear my hair short, and I thought that was cool. But, at the same time, I never want to put rules down on me and say, ‘OK, I do this for this and this for that.’ I just don’t like rules. I don’t.

Sometimes when I do an overdub solo, they’ll keep four or five of my attempts and then mix the bits that they like to make a solo up out of them. It’s not against the rules, really – I can learn my own solos, then. But that’s the whole beauty of multi-track recording, isn’t it?
The ideas I stand for are not mine. I borrowed them from Socrates. I swiped them from Chesterfield. I stole them from Jesus. And I put them in a book. If you don’t like their rules, whose would you use?

You’re not going to eliminate concussions. Anytime you hit your head, you have a chance of getting a concussion, in any sport, too. I think we have to learn more about it. Part of it is rules, part of it is equipment, part of it is medicalstudies, knowing more about the brain.
I’m an untrained musician. Untrained musicians don’t really have any music theory, they don’t have a lot of rules. We break the rules, but it’s mostly because we don’t know what the rules are. It’s easy for us to go to certain places, so I’m not surprised that a lot of people were amused by my songwriting style.
For you to askadvice on the rules of love is no better than to ask advice on the rules of madness.

In things to be seen at once, much variety makes confusion, another vice of beauty. In things that are not seen at once, and have no respect one to another, great variety is commendable, provided this variety transgress not the rules of optics and geometry.
I don’t want to make that sound like I’m preaching from a mountain top when I say you have to give your family everything, because I know it’s hard for people. I’m lucky to be in a position where you can establish those ground rules and make it that way.
Why do we take pleasure in gruesome death, neatly packaged as a puzzle to which we may find a satisfactory solution through clues – or if we are not clever enough, have it revealed by the all-powerful tale-teller at the end of the book? It is something to do with being reduced to, and comforted by, playing by the rules.
If you want to be a modern citizen of the world, you have to be minimally capable in technology. It’s a new literacy test. Technology rules your outcome in life. And software is making a lot of decisions in our lives.

Each of us has the choice to attend the church we want to, or none at all. They will continue to be able to do so.
Well, I’m a runner, and I have to run with Secret Service – even though they can run twice as fast. It took me a while to get used to running with them, because I love the solitaryaspect of it. So I have two rules. First, I can’t hear their feet. And second, I can’t see their shadows.

Rules about publicsanitation are a simple and familiar example. Without them, a city can’t be a healthy place to live; but these rules don’t just happen. The rules for a city are different from the ones for a village, but as a village slowly gets bigger, a city may be stuck with the rules of the village.
My life hasn’t been conventional and it hasn’t been linear. I’ve had to make it up as I’ve gone along, which has taught me a lot. If you don’t accept the obvious options that are laid out for you, it’s up to you to work out where you’re going and to create your own specific rules and goals.
I try to be careful because technology changes so much over the years. But some things don’t change. Kids and parents have disagreements, kids try to manipulate, parents try to sit down with rules and regs. That part never changes.

We shot in the bed of Mary Pickford, and you cannot be any more accurate than that, so that helped a lot.
Life is a game with many rules but no referee. One learns how to play it more by watching it than by consulting any book, including the holy book. Small wonder, then, that so many play dirty, that so few win, that so many lose.
I have made myself what I am. And I would that I could make the red people as great as the conceptions of my own mind, when I think of the Great Spirit that rules over us all.
I also believe that government has no business telling us how we should live our lives. I think our lifestyle choices should be left up to us. What we do in our private lives is none of the government’s business. That position rules out the Republican Party for me.
Oddly, I do have a problem with authority. I find it very difficult to knuckle down and follow rules. Which are the classic symptoms of someone who has a troubled relationship with their father. And yet, I never had a problem with my father.

We seem to have set up some very arcane rules as to when it is actually OK to applaud.
Acting is playing pretend, playing a children’s game at an adult level, but with children’s rules. It’s fun to play bad guys. I’ve never been in a fight in my life, so it’s fun to play something that’s different.
I don’t think that golf has a place for two sets of rules. I think one of the reasons that the game has progressed in the way that it has over the years is the fact that the amateurs and the pros all play the same game, and they play under the same set of rules.
Well, it is true that they did – the Pentagon did impose rules for governing the handling of the Koran in January of 2003, after there had been complaints about the handling of the Koran from detainees, from the International Red Cross.

The Senate as an institution is broken. We’re not doing the work of the American people and the rules are being abused. The only way to get us back to the traditions where the Senate is doing the work of the American people is to change the rules.

I have such a respect for comedy. It’s a lot harder than doing drama, in my opinion; you have to have sort of an innatesense of humor. There are rules to comedy you can learn. But ultimately, it really does require a certain point of view on the world, and that really does appeal to me.
I don’t know the rules of grammar… If you’re trying to persuade people to do something, or buy something, it seems to me you should use their language, the language they use every day, the language in which they think. We try to write in the vernacular.
The fact that biological, or ‘natural’ rules might help in the creation of a computer generated work of art is interesting, but even a wonderful work of art made in this fashion isn’t the same as a person, with all his or her experiences and emotions involved, making art.

With ‘The Forty Rules of Love,’ I wanted to write a love story. But I wanted a love story with a spiritual dimension. For me, that took me to Rumi. And from Rumi, I went to Shams of Tabriz. That’s how the story took shape.
I am conscious of that when I make these games: I try to make a game that has beautiful open spaces, gaps, room for players to enjoy it in ways that were not authored. I never want it to be where you have to follow the rules completely, where you have to do things exactly as the designers intended.
Sometimes, when you work with directors who have done it a lot and are established in the business and know the game, there are all these rules that they have. First-time directors will allow you to come in with choices. They’re not so jaded by actors that they’re like, ‘Ugh, just do your job, man.’
It occurred to me, when I was old enough to make rules of my own, that they should be fair and simple.

In the Hitchcock rules of suspense, you are supposed to know that there is a bomb on the bus that might blow up, and then it becomes very tense – but if you don’t know that there’s a bomb and it just blows up, then it’s just a surprise.
Rules help govern and steer a relationship along, so they’re good things. But they become bad things when they become the narrow gate though which the relationship must always pass. When this happens, the rules become the basis for the relationship and, in a sense, become a substitute for the relationship.
There definitely will be flying cars, but whether there’ll be flying cars for most people to use, it’ll probably take a long time to straighten everything out, all the rules and hassles. It’ll take a while to figure out how to keep people from crashing into each other.

The Democrats filibustered something in the Senate when I was eight years old. I don’t remember what it was on and I didn’t honestly care when I was eight years old. I cared about the history and the Senate rules.
My characters aren’t losers. They’re rebels. They win by their refusal to play by everyone else’s rules.
We’ve been a bit too defensive about the European Union rules. We don’t want to become protectionist and nationalist in the way we buy things but we think we could do a lot more to promote British business through procurement.
Everything has changed in recent decades – the economy, technology, culturalattitudes, the demographics of the workforce, the role of women in society and the structure of the American family. The base pathsbelonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault.
For me acting is a passion and an art, and always will only be that. I don’t have any rules when it comes to acting. I’ll do anything. But it depends on the script. Either I’ll have passion for the project or I won’t. It’s got to fuel me.
The thing you can’t let go of is gravity. The reality of gravity in writing. If someone says something really mean in a sitcom, and the next wave isn’t a reaction to the reality of that, you start losing relatability. In a lot of romantic comedies, they throw out the rules of life.

The People’s Republic of China has 2 million strong in its military, and it’s trying to make them stronger through gene editing, and that’s just one of the ways that China is trying to essentially dominate the planet and set the rules and the world order.
At which point should we let go and do what we want to do, and when should we submit to rules? Coming to terms with our true natures and who we really are has always been a fascination to humans. I know it fascinates me.
