I’ve alwaysfelt like I was an actor for hire. And almost apologetic for being a woman of color, trying to stifle that voice. But I don’t feel that way in Shondaland. I feel like I am accepted into a world where I’m a part of the narrative – I’m a part of it.
I think that the best way to explain that is that my mother gave me all the color and character and flare and liveliness, and my father gave me all the sanity and nature and all the things that helped me be a more rounded human being.
We used to look at each other and say, ‘We play the same game with the same rules, the same bat, the same ball, the same field. What the hell does color have to do with it? You don’t play with color. You play with talent.’
I’m not one that believes that affirmative action should be based on one’s skin color or one’s gender, I think it should be done based on one’s need, because I think if you are from a poor white community, I think that poor white kid needs a scholarship just as badly as a poor black kid.
Without black, no color has any depth. But if you mix black with everything, suddenly there’s shadow – no, not just shadow, but fullness. You’ve got to be willing to mix black into your palette if you want to create something that’s real.
What I love about the stories of the Great Migration is that this is not ancient history; this is living history. Most people of color can find someone in their own family who had experienced a migration of some kind, knowing the sense of dislocation, longing and fortitude.
I’ve neverbothered about my color. I never had that thing about being black. If the whole world was like that, maybe there would be more harmony and love. Maybe. I don’t have a problem with being black in a white country or being with my people.
What interested me was not news, but appraisal. What I sought was to grasp the flavor of a man, his texture, his impact, what he stood for, what he believed in, what made him what he was and what color he gave to the fabric of his time.
If you want someone to feel warm, you dress them in a warm color and put a warm light on them and you get the picture. Sometimes, all that needs pushing a little bit to help tell the story.
We do need more deaf people in Hollywood. But I don’t think that deaf people always have to play a deaf role. I think we can play different roles. We need to see more diversity period. More people of color. More disabled people. More gender diversity. All kinds of diversity.
I’ve been dealing with racism since I was a little kid! My dad’s super black, from Puerto Rico. Then my mom’s super white – she’s Puerto Rican too, but she grew up in Milwaukee. As a Latino in the U.S. I’ve seen how we are treated differently based on the color of our skin.
I wanted a baby of color, to be honest, because I wasn’t attached to the idea that I look like the biological mother. I liked the idea of the adoption being clear; it was and is not something I am interested in hiding.
My knowledge and thirst for knowledge has no expiration date… It goes until I’m dead. I will be learning and studying from youth, as well as people older than me… Having degrees as a person of color in this country is the one thing that can’t nobody take away from me.
Yeah, I did see where the people dissing me were coming from. But, it’s like, anything that happened in the past between black and white, I can’t really speak on it, because I wasn’t there. I don’t feel like me being born the color I am makes me any less of a person.
When they show the destruction of society on color TV, I want to be able to look out over Los Angeles and make sure they get it right.
The reality is that there are so few roles out there for women and for women of color, and I’m a character actor, this I know. And I’m getting to see more of the roles that are out there, but there aren’t many. And zilch have been studiomovies. Zilch.
For me, you don’t ever want to be defined by the color of your skin. You want to be defined by your work ethic, the person that you are, your character, your personality. That’s what I’ve tried to go out and do.
A lot of the stuff in ‘Speed Racer’ has never been done before, from it having a multi-tone, to it having a retro-cool family movie, to having the photo-realism with the CG-backgrounds and infinite focus the way they worked with these digital cameras, to even the color experimentation.
There’s this false notion that you have to separate and choose between issues of class and issues of race. What people do when they say that you need to separate class from race is that they are really just saying that people of color should come second.
The history of slavery in this country has affected not only how black people see themselves, but how white people see black people as well, and the roles they’re meant to play… I’m aware of it, as a person of color.
The reason the art world doesn’t respond to Kinkade is because none – not one – of his ideas about subject-matter, surface, color, composition, touch, scale, form, or skill is remotelyoriginal. They’re all cliche and already told.
In my mind, numbers and words are far more than squiggles of ink on a page. They have form, color, texture and so on. They come alive to me, which is why as a young child I thought of them as my ‘friends.’
I’ve always been intrigued by color and by interesting hair. I was one of those weirdlittle girls doing my own hair at the age of 9. I was, like, getting weird gels and new brushes and cornrow holders. I would tweak and perm at the age of 13.
I’ve always felt that color is intrinsically personal. It evokes a tremendous amount of emotion. If there’s a color you respond to, that’s something you can incorporate into your home. No one can tell you it’s wrong.
Gray goes with gold. Gray goes with all colors. I’ve done gray-and-red paintings, and gray and orange go so well together. It takes a long time to make gray because gray has a little bit of color in it.
If any man claims the Negro should be content… let him say he would willingly change the color of his skin and go to live in the Negro section of a large city. Then and only then has he a right to such a claim.
The whole world, as we experience it visually, comes to us through the mysticrealm of color.
The dominant invades the entire picture, as it were. In this way I seek to individualize the color, because I have come to believe that there is a living world of each color and I express these worlds.
If a person is homosexual by nature – that is, if one’s sexuality is as intrinsic a part of one’s identity as gender or skin color – then society can no more deny a gay person access to the secular rights and religious sacraments because of his homosexuality than it can reinstate JimCrow.
Art is always an exaggeration in some sense; in color, in form, even in theme, etc… but it has always been this way. It is the same with the nature of some works by Giotto or Massacio, or the color of life as expressed by Van Gogh.
Working in a salon, you look at trendsall day long. You’re looking at color all the time, what new products are coming out. You’re a part of the fashion industry, especially if you’re working in a higher-end salon.
The first time I ever saw people of any color was when D-Day left from my hometown in England, to go and free Europe from the war. And there was every color you could imagine, and I’d not seen that in England.
Make sure that when you look at your plate, it’s a beautiful blank canvas to start with, and you want lots of color on there. You want to make sure you have whole grains and protein. It should not be beige in color; it should be green and bright red, and orange and yellow.
We police in America in communities of color and economicallychallenging community, we police based on the behavior of the numerical minority that is committing crime. That small percentage of people who commit crimes in a community becomes the methods that’s used for the entire community.
My father is German; my mother is African-American. Growing up, I visited my grandparents in Berlin a lot. I would not see any other person of color for three weeks. People would stare. They would say things like, ‘Oh, you look like chocolate – I want to eat you up!’
It’s important to maintain an attractive smile as you age. A lighter, less beige, more white tooth color is key, but no Chiclets.
Racism has two primaryfunctions: the oppression of people of color, which most people recognize, but also the simultaneous elevation of white people. You can’t hold one group down without lifting the other up.
Designing bridal is perfect for me, because black is my least favorite color, if you could call it a color.
I realized quickly what Mandela and Tambo meant to ordinary Africans. It was a place where they could come and find a sympathetic ear and a competent ally, a place where they would not be either turned away or cheated, a place where they might actually feel proud to be represented by men of their own skin color.
Baseball is a game of race, creed, and color. The race is to first base. The creed is the rules of the game. The color? Well, the home teamwears white uniforms, and the visiting team wears gray.
When I was a kid, I was obsessed with this idea of opening a restaurant back in Indiana on a little pond. The guests would order their dinner and then take a little boat out with a colored flag on the front of it. When the matching color of the flag on their boat went up on a flag pole, their dinner was ready!
The primary victims of Katrina, those who were given the least help by the government, those rescued last or not at all, were overwhelmingly people of color largelyhidden from the mainstream of society.
The more people who come forward and talk about how much they love gaming, how much they talk about individuality and diversity, the more gamers of color that come out and gay gamers that come out and everybody talking about what they love – that’s what the community has in common: a love of gaming.
The Negro has been here in America since 1619, a total of 344 years. He is not going anywhere else; this country is his home. He wants to do his part to help make his city, state, and nation a better place for everyone, regardless of color and race.
I thought that it would be easier to learn that if I worked in motion pictures. So I went to work with one motion picture producer who was developing a color system. This didn’t do to me much good. All I did was pick filters for the camera.
No religion makes more use of color than Hinduism, with its blue-skinned gods and peony-lipped goddesses, and even the springfestival of Holi is focused on color: Boys squirt arcs of dyed water on passersby or dump powder, all violently hued, on their marks.
Art brings a message into a room. It should make us perceive in a new way – either through color, form or narrative content – something we had not perceived before… and perhaps reveal something to you about yourself.
We have but one flag, one country; let us stand together. We may differ in color, but not in sentiment. Many things have been said about me which are wrong, and which white and black persons here, who stood by me through the war, can contradict.
Nathan Bedford Forrest
Guys would sleep with a bicycle if it had the right color lip gloss on. They have no shame. They’re like bull elks in a field.
Like, you can’t tell a certain race, like, ‘You’re supposed to act this way, and you’re not supposed to act this way because of what color you are,’ like, that’s just holding everybody back, you know what I’m saying?
Each player, it will be observed, has eight superior Pieces or officers, and eight minor ones which are called Pawns; and, for the purpose of distinction, the Pieces and Pawns of one party are of a different color from those of the other.
Black and white is abstract; color is not. Looking at a black and white photograph, you are already looking at a strange world.
I have a corn creamer that I love. It extracts pulp and juice from kernels, and I simmer that down into a creamed corn that has an almost mashed potato-like consistency. I add butter and hit it with chopped fresh chives at the end for an accent of color.
I like to write about painting because I think visually. I see my writing as blocks of color before it forms itself. I think I also care about painting because I’m not musical. Painting to me is not a metaphor for writing, but something people do that can never be reduced to words.
The sun feels so lovely on your skin, but it can be really damaging. I make sure to wear SPF 50 sun cream all over my body at all times. It takes a bit longer to get tanned, but the color stays way longer afterwards.
Red certainly is the family color. From my mother and my grandmother, I’ve learned a lot of little tricks – the significance of color and lipstick being one of them. I started skating when I was eight years old, and my mom did my makeup for me back then.
I started doing sculpture in 1959. I had no commissions then. They were painted, similar in style to the paintings… At a certain point, I decided I didn’t want an edge between two colors, I wanted color differences in literal space.
There are a lot of podcasters that are females of color. And I think that we should be allowed to tell a very specific kind of story. And if you don’t like it, you don’t like it. But if you do, enjoy the tea! Sip that tea.
I’m not a fan of grillingmeat, since that tends to dry it out, and I find grill marks leave a bitter taste. A good steak house will offer different options for preparation, and I would ask them to broil or pan-roast the steak and finish it with butter. It ends up a dark chocolate color and stays very juicy.
We want to get people of color out to vote, because their vote matters. Every politician tries to capture it. But it’s More Than a Vote because we want to come up with what’s our ask, and hold these politicians‘ feet to the fire to make real change.
You know, post-production is a bit of a grind to me. If I’m producing a film, I really… I mean I like editing, but all the other crap, the color mixing and… it’s all a grind. And so as a result I cut back producing the number of films I was producing.
It is no longer socially permissible to use race, explicitly, as a justification for discrimination, exclusion, and social contempt. So we don’t. Rather than rely on race, we use our criminal justice system to label people of color ‘criminals’ and then engage in all the practices we supposedly left behind.
When I first started wearing pink, it wasn’t nothing I planned on doing or strategized. But people showed me so much love for the pink mink I wore, I had to go out to Pantone and create my own color, which is called Killa Pink.
The Muslim world just doesn’t believe that skin color is all that important. Obama may be half-black, but he’s still all-Western, according to them. It doesn’t matter whether you’re black, white or green – if you’re not a devotee of Muhammad, you don’t matter.
I stand today on this floor to appeal for protection from the strong arm of the government for her loyal children, irrespective of color and race, who are citizens of the southern states, and particularly of the State of Georgia.
The rich are different. Their wants are very high maintenance. They’ll pick eye color and hair color, all the way down to what she does for a living, what school she went to. Their list can be extremely long. But at the end of the day, dating is dating, because they’re human beings.
Perhaps the old monks were right when they tried to root love out; perhaps the poets are right when they try to water it. It is a blood-red flower, with the color of sin; but there is always the scent of a god about it.
I don’t work from drawings. I don’t make sketches and drawings and color sketches into a final painting.
I’ve always loved to prove people wrong. I want to be able to cross color lines, because in music, there really is no barrier.
Once the image was in the digital environment, one of the problems was, we had no means to reproduce the color spectrum, grey scale, and contrast that film produces, without converting the digital file to film, evaluating it, then going back and changing the digital image.
Unless the guitar works as a color, then I don’t use it, so I haven‘t been playing guitar too much lately.
I did some pastels and I did other pieces in which there was just basically one color per square, and then they would get bigger and I could get 2 or 3 colors into the square, and ultimately I just started making oil paintings.
Try to forget what objects you have before you – a tree, a house, a field, or whatever. Merely think, ‘Here is a little square of blue, here an oblong of pink, here a streak of yellow,’ and paint it just as it looks to you, the exact color and shape, until it gives you your own impression of the scene before you.
There are so many ways to decorate small spaces. One of my favorite things is throw pillows. They can add so much color to your room. You can have the same bedding for years and just switch out the throw pillows, and it looks like you have a completely new bed.
As people of color, it took a whole generation in many ways to get us out of the kitchen, and it’s gonna take us the same whole generation to get us back into the kitchen and have ownership of restaurants, hotels and stuff like that.
I burn very easily, so if I forget sunscreen, I will be a tomato by the end of the day. I’m very big on sunscreen and hats. I grew up in Florida, and I love the beach, and I think it’s healthy to get a little bit of color.
When I hear Obama speak he just seems really sincere and he just seems like somebody who actually has his heart and his motivation in the right place. Forget about color or race or gender or whatever, he’s got his heart in the right place.
As long as white people put people of color, African Americans and Latinos, in the same dispensable bag, and look at our children of color as insignificant and treat women of color as not as deserving of protection as white women, we will never achieve true equality.
Being the only non-Black was a unique experience. After a few weeks, you’re not aware of skin color differences. You see the color; you’re not blind, but it doesn’t matter. You see the human being first.
A 527 doesn’t have a wife. It doesn’t have a brother-in-law who knows a lot about politics, or a union president who calls and doesn’t like the color of the suit, or bimbo eruptions. It’s the perfect candidate, because it has no personal characteristics.
They sit there in committees day after day, And they each put in a color and it comes out gray. And we all have heard the saying, which is true as well as witty, That a camel is a horse that was designed by a committee.
I am installed in a fairylike place. I do not know where to poke my head; everything is superb, and I would like to do everything, so I use up and squander lots of color, for there are trials to be made.
No matter who you are, no matter what your color, creed, how you choose to pray or who you choose to love, that if you are an American – first generation or fifth – one who is willing to work hard, play by the rules and apply your God-given talents – that you should be able to find a job that pays the bills.
I believe in human beings, and that all human beings should be respected as such, regardless of their color.
The fashion industry isn’t merely content to encase my meaty flanks in skintight denim. Oh, no! That denim also has to be white, a color that attractsketchup, wine, garlic aioli, and any other foodstuffs I might otherwise be able to enjoy if I wasn’t wearing ridiculously tight pants.
We judge on the basis of what somebody looks like, skin color, whether we think they’re beautiful or not. That space on the Internet allows you to converse with somebody with none of those things involved.
Adele ultimately did well in such a large way because she affects everybody, and the way that she writes seems to be popular music, not because of her skin color but because she writes great music, and it’s popular in that way.
I was an aspiring astrophysicist, and that’s how I defined myself, not by my skin color. People didn’t treat me as someone with science ambitions. They treated me as someone they thought was going to mug them, or who was a shoplifter.
I am real, real picky with what I decided to do. I want to make sure it’s new and at the same time that it’s in the same color of what I have played before. Not to pigeon hole myself but I don’t like to do fluff.
My favorite shampoos and conditioners are from Pantene’s DamageRepair line, but I also love the Color Preserve Shine collection. I get highlights here and there to brighten my look, so the Color Preserve shampoo and conditioner is great for protection.
I have my misgivings about 3-D. I don’t like the lack of blacks and whites, how it dulls the image, how the color gets corrupted. I don’t necessarily like the experience of having heavyglasses in front of me.
There is a saying, ‘Eyes are the windows to the soul.’ It means, mostly, people can see through someone else by eye contact in seven seconds. I have a habit that if I meet someone I don’t know, I’d like to look at her or his eyes on purpose. When my eyes lay on them, I can immediately see their true color.
Purple is my favorite color. It makes me think of spring and summer. A purple dress, eating grapes, lilacs – I love purple.
I’d become sort of involved in things that were happening to people. No matter what color they be, whether they be Indians, or Negroes, the poor white person or anyone who was I thought more or less getting a bad shake.
When we talk about feminism – equality without apology for all – we can’t be talking about for all white women or all highlyeducated women but all women, regardless of color, class, creed, sexual orientation or identity.
Film has far more color shades. It’s called ‘bit depth’ in digital terms. And most bit depth in digital is about twelve, but film bit depth can be twenty to thirty. And so you just have more shades of yellow and red and oranges and everything.
I think there is a big difference between expressing the pain and anger that many African Americans and other people of color may feel versus language that I think now crosses the line and goes into hate.
Summer is the perfect time to go for bursts of color, like a big beaded necklace.
Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss
I think ‘Two Towers‘ is a completely distinct film from ‘Fellowship of the Ring’ or ‘Return of the King.’ I think that you can watch them as a group and watch how the story evolves, but I think each one was made in its own entirety, and each one has its own palate of sound and music and color and characterization.
I think it doesn’t matter, the color of your skin; it doesn’t matter where you are from. It matters how you relate to people, how you connect with people, and the open-mindedness with which you approach the subject. That’s to me what matters when you are making a film, not who you are or where you are from.
In our life there is a single color, as on an artist’s palette, which provides the meaning of life and art. It is the color of love.
The over-all point is that new technology will not necessarily replace old technology, but it will date it. By definition. Eventually, it will replace it. But it’s like people who had black-and-white TVs when color came out. They eventually decided whether or not the new technology was worth the investment.
I like light, color, luminosity. I like things full of color and vibrant.
Oscar de la Renta
Sometimes on stage I prefer to feel more glamorous, so I’ll go all out when it’s a stage outfit like sparkly, colorful, and have a certain shape. If someone is watching it from far away they can maybe remember the shape or the color.
Lianne La Havas
I’ve spent a lot of time in India. When I was a young cinematographer, I was completely enthralled by the color, the movement, the sounds. But photographically, it was very hard to capture it; photographs rarely did it justice.
I think it was just an opera. Now, you go to opera, you expect to see and hear what the opera is. So, it was Catfish Row. It was singers. Marvelous voices. It didn’t make no difference what color they were.
Girls of color and young women need to be seen, heard, and valued. Schools can help make this happen by including our stories in the curriculum.
For so many years, I’ve been an actor acting in other people’s movies, and in ‘Unstoppable,’ I’m producing it, and I have an opportunity to create some of that excitement with style and form and different color templates and things like that. So, as an artist, it’s really exciting.
At first I had some idea that the absence of color made the work more physical. Early on I was very involved with the notion of the painting as an object and tended to attack that idea from different directions.
All of these young people have some kind of potential in them. And if we don’t invest in them as a nation, regardless of where they come from or what color they are, if we don’t invest in them, we lose.
I want to see us push for economical and educational advancement in communities of color and low-income communities, and I want to see our relationships between our communities and our law enforcement be advanced.
The colors I choose there was to paint the first hotel, the Disneyland Hotel. Because of the cloudy sky we had in Paris, it had to be a particular kind of color who will fight those grey days. And also something you can see when you’re driving up ‘There it is! We’re arriving!’
On the one hand, there is no reason that a black person needs to live a portion of his or her life being concerned about the people of color around him. On the other hand, if you don’t you’re crazy.
Sure, being good at your job is really important, but in acting, so much of the decision’s already made the minute you walk in the room because they’re like, ‘His hair’s good or she’s got the right skin color’ or whatever. It’s so random, but it’s so physically oriented.
No, we don’t control who our parents are. We don’t control what color we are. We don’t control what home we are born into. But we control our attitude. We control our work ethic. We control our drive and our commitment.
The moon is bland in color. I call it shades of gray. You know, the only color we see is what we bring or the Earth, which is looking down upon us all the time. And to find orange soil on the moon was a surprise.
The way it works for me is my sight and sound senses are combined. Every sound I associate with a color and every color I associate with a sound… The way I see things is constant streamers across the room, bouncing off from every touch and every sound. Over the years, I’ve learned what color palates I love most.
As a kid I didn’t see black cowboys on the screen. What that said to me was that there were things I couldn’t do or be because of my color. What we see others like us do gives us permission to expand our own horizons.
It’s different, it’s weird to say, ‘She’s a white rapper or she can’t do this because she’s this color – this color does this thing. These are the boxes we have, this is what it is, don’t try to change it.’ And it’s crazy to me because I’m just not from that world, so I can’t really rock with it all the way.
When I was a child I asked my mother what homosexuality was about and she said – and this was 100 years ago in Germany and she was very open-minded – ‘It’s like hair color. It’s nothing. Some people are blond and some people have dark hair. It’s not a subject.’ This was a very healthy attitude.
The greatestlesson I learned that year in Mrs. Henry’s class was the lesson Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., tried to teach us all: Never judge people by the color of their skin. God makes each of us unique in ways that go much deeper.
The modes of expression of men of genius differ as much as their souls, and it is impossible to say that in some among them, drawing and color are better or worse than in others.
I come from a family of Mississippi sharecroppers just a few generations away from slavery, and I experienced a lot of racism growing up – you can’t avoid that if you’re a person of color in this country.
Carrie Mae Weems
I think ‘The Color Purple’ is so bursting with love, the need for connection, the showing of the need for connection around the globe.
Freedom is an indivisible word. If we want to enjoy it, and fight for it, we must be prepared to extend it to everyone, whether they are rich or poor, whether they agree with us or not, no matter what their race or the color of their skin.
The only problem I have with American money is that it’s all kind of the same color, so I’m always having to look. Whereas with Australian money, you have purple, blue, yellow… We keep it nice and simple.
My spray-tan woman is amazing. She comes to my house at 10 o’clock the night before a shoot. The results are so brown, flawless, and natural. It’s just weird because my natural skin color is very white, almost whitish yellow.
I never really had to put much thought into my race, and neither did anybody else. I knew I was black. I knew there was a history that accompanied my skin color, and my parents taught me to be proud of it. End of story.
Parts are becoming interchangeable, so that it doesn’t matter what color a person is. And that’s what it’s all about, right?
This nation has always struggled with how it was going to deal with poor people and people of color. Every few years you will see some great change in the way that they approach this. We’ve had the war on poverty that never really got into waging a real war on poverty.
We are prophetic interrogators. Why are so many people hungry? Why are so many people and families in our shelters? Why do we have one of six of our children poor, and one of three of these are children of color? ‘Why?’ is the prophetic question.
I made a lot of friends at school, and they were all Africans. I could have felt very different. I didn’t feel different, I didn’t notice the color of their skin, I didn’t notice the color of my skin and I have remembered that all my life.
It is among the evils of slavery that it taints the very sources of moral principle. It establishes false estimates of virtue and vice: for what can be more false and heartless than this doctrine which makes the first and holiest rights of humanity to depend upon the color of the skin?
A black suit can be classic and timeless and certainly for most occasions. But remember, it’s not so much the color of suit as it is about the fit, cut, style, and, of course, attitude you have when wearing it.
Now I’m way into suits that I can put on whether I took a shower or not, and wear barefoot and paint my toes black or whatever color the suit is. It’s very cool to wear suits like that. Roll up the sleeves and just say yee-haw.
Hawaii‘s own Patsy Mink served as the first congresswoman of color and first Asian American woman in the House; she later sought the Democratic Partypresidential nomination.
Children of color need a mirror to see themselves in. And then people who don’t have that experience, they need a window. They need a really personalized way to see what people who are different from them are going through.
One of my favorite beauty products is Vincent Longo Water Canvas creamy blush. I have it in every color and I’ve been using it for 5 years and that’s all I put on when I leave the house. It looks so natural I just put a little bit on my cheeks to give them some color.
I think a lot of L.A. is something like USC – this incredible white culture living in the midst of color, and no obviousreaction to it at all. I mean, they have guards at the gate at USC – guards at the gate of a major university! And the guards chase young black boys away – I’ve seen it, chasing 8-year-old boys.
I used to get my hair dyed at a place called Big Hair. It cost $15. They just used straight bleach, so my hair was the color of white lined paper, and my eyebrows looked like they were done with a thick black marker.
New Orleansinvented the brown paper bag party – usually at a gathering in a home – where anyone darker than the bag attached to the door was denied entrance. The brown bag criterion survives as a metaphor for how the black cultural elite quite literally establishes caste along color lines within black life.
If you’re differently-abled, if you’re a person of color, if you express your identity in a way that’s different from the norm, for whatever reason, there’s an implicit bias where people, frankly, sometimes take you less seriously.
Some white people are privileged, some aren’t. Some black people are, some aren’t. It’s strikes me as, by definition, a racist attack in that it’s making a generalization – a negative one – based on skin color.
As a child, during the war, I drew Spitfires and Messerschmitts. With Spot, I found that I had designed a fuselage! His spot is on his side, the roundel marking of an English fighter plane, and the color bar of his tail is the color stripes of a plane’s rudder.
You know, I’ve been playing with my hair color ever since I was nine.
Nature, too, shall live its own life. We must beware not to disrupt it with the color of our houses and interior fittings. yet we should not attempt to bring nature, houses, and human beings together into a higher unity.
It is not easy to get parts in mainstream films for most people of color. Hollywood and British writers are not writing parts for us, or the directors are not interested in casting us in parts that are color-blind.
And I asked my mother about it; I said, ‘Is there something wrong?’ She said, ‘God… God makes people. You meet a lot of people and have a lot of experiences, and they color you and stay with you – but I’m not the grievingwidow. Life is much more complicated and interesting and full of zigs and zags than that.
Antiwhite racism is developing in sections of our cities where individuals – some of whom have French nationality – contemptuously designate French people as gaulois on the pretext they don’t share the same religion, color or origins.
Black and white creates a strange dreamscape that color never can.
If you’re white and you’re wrong, then you’re wrong; if you’re black and you’re wrong, you’re wrong. People are people. Black, blue, pink, green – God make no rules about color; only society make rules where my people suffer, and that why we must have redemption and redemption now.
I never identified with anybody. I have always been very sensitive about my color, because everybody called me ‘yellow gal.’ I was caught in between both sides – nobody wanted me. I love that my audience is there, but I always feel as though I have to fend for myself.
And my point was one I think that you’d agree with, which is there’s no room in America for a black racist, a Latino racist, or a white racist, or an Asian racist, or a Native American racist. Now, we’re either color blind or we’re not color blind.
Usually I’m very, very involved with choosing my character’s wardrobe and knowing exactly how I want the character to look and this is the color palette and the textures and these are the kinds of shoes she’d wear.

The phoebe-bird is a wise architect and perhaps enjoys as great an immunity from danger, both in its person and its nest, as any other bird. Its modest ashen-gray suit is the color of the rocks where it builds, and the moss of which it makes such free use gives to its nest the look of a natural growth or accretion.
When I was asked to compose a score for… ‘Palo Alto,’ I first thought to myself, ‘What is the house that these characters would want to live in?’ I wanted to paint a picture and color scheme that I could work around. I gently apply different daubs to see what fits to match the color I have in mind with these characters.
Gaiety is one of the most important elements I brought to fashion. I brought it through color.
When you’re doing a film and the majority of the film is cast black, for me, it’s most important to get people to view those movies as just movies, as just good movies. At the end of the day, regardless of the color of the cast, we’re all doing the same thing in this business: trying to make a good film.
We have to support everyone so their stories don’t get ‘invisibilized.’ We don’t necessarily have to repopulate the next Marvel movie with people of color, but it’s just about saying ‘We have hearts, we have souls, we have minds, we have faults, we have flaws, and we’re super-freaking interesting.’
I have a Viking stove. The color is butter lemon, and I had to wait severalmonths for it, because that color wasn’t available and I really wanted butter lemon! But I don’t know that it’s seriously ever been cooked on. I mean, I make tea every morning. Does that count?
Beauty – what is beauty, forsooth? Form and color; that is, surface only. Fortune – what is fortune? Nothing is ever a pleasure or a real profit to him who has to labour for it. Truth – you die in the pursuit, and the sea beats the beach as it did a thousand years ago. The stolid are alone happy.
Take that one thing you don’t like about yourself and more often than not that’s the one thing that makes you more special. Whether it’s that gap in your teeth, or that mole you never liked, or your skin color.
When a moment in front of me appears to be particularly special, whether it be by beauty or experience, I capture it. I usually find a reason to justify taking that photo – symmetry, or color, or contrast – and it’s my hope that my photography sheds light onto what I see and do on a daily basis.
I grew up in Houston, and I remember we had separate drinking fountains, and black people sat in the balcony of the theater… We had an African-American housekeeper growing up who was really like my second mother. I thought it was silly – hatred just because of the color of somebody’s skin.
Almost every collection I do has 200 different references. I don’t have two of the same coat, two of the same dress. I have it in one color, in one fabric. I’ve tried to adapt the culture of couture, and the know-how and the heritage, but I try to update it.
Well, again working strictly to the film, where you had this lovely, lovely land of brightness and color. And everybody is smiling and happy and butterflies flitting around and it was that kind of image that, it was like a dream world, really.
